The day I was honored with the Milken Educator of the Year award was a whirlwind of excitement and surprise. Seeking personal recognition has never been my style; in fact, I distinctly remember expressing to Eric Dockery, my principal at Edgar Allan Poe Elementary School, during our end-of-year meeting my preference not to draw attention to my Those Who Excel award from ISBE the previous year. So when I walked into the gym that day, I had absolutely no clue what was about to unfold. Reflecting on that unforgettable moment, I recall the sheer joy on the faces of my colleagues and students, the heartfelt conversations with my family, and the overwhelming support from the Milken Family Foundation, my community, and everyone I've encountered since. The pride I feel is immense, extending far beyond myself – it's a pride that resonates throughout my entire community.
This honor further highlights the profound significance of representation within the teaching profession, particularly for African American educators like myself. Raised in a family where education was revered and hard work was valued, I was inspired by the sacrifices and dedication of my loved ones. Their unwavering support and belief in the power of education fueled my journey. As I navigated my career in education, I realized the weight of responsibility that comes with being an African American educator. I intimately understand the transformative impact of seeing someone who shares your cultural background in a position of authority and influence. Now, as a recipient of this award, I am driven to serve as a light of inspiration for other aspiring educators of color, encouraging them to fearlessly pursue their dreams in education.
Moreover, this recognition underscores the urgent need to advocate for systemic changes within the education system – especially to address the inequities and disparities disproportionately affecting students of color. It solidifies my commitment to championing policies and practices aimed at promoting equity and removing barriers to academic success. As I advance in my career, I aspire to witness the cultivation of partnerships between schools and communities, empowering students, families, and local stakeholders to collaborate and nurture the holistic development and well-being of all students.
In essence, this prestigious teaching award transcends personal achievement; it is a testament to our collective effort to create a more inclusive and equitable educational landscape. It reaffirms my steadfast commitment to fostering excellence, equity, and empowerment in the classroom and beyond. Together, we will continue to challenge the status quo, advocate for change, and strive toward a future in which every student has the opportunity to reach their full potential.
